Guidance on Discussing School Shootings with Children

Guidance on Discussing School Shootings with Children

After four decades of addressing school violence, I wanted to provide guidance on speaking with children about traumatic events like the recent shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon.

Staying Composed and Modeling Behavior

It is important to manage your emotions during these discussions. Children look to adults for cues, so demonstrating calm and positive behavior is vital.

Maintaining Routines

Try to keep regular routines intact. Familiarity and normalcy help create a sense of security for children.

Creating a Safe Environment

Reassure the children of their safety. Provide them with a safe space to express their feelings and thoughts.

Listening and Communicating

Listen attentively to their concerns. Respond with honesty, hope, and kindness. Tailor your advice to their age to ensure they understand.

Showing Solidarity

If appropriate, consider praying for the victims together, reinforcing compassion and support.
