The Greenland government has issued a warning to an American oil company linked to former President Donald Trump’s administration. This comes as the US expresses interest in acquiring Greenland due to its strategic resources. Despite lacking permission, the Texas firm Greenland Energy began moving drilling equipment to eastern Greenland in July, prompting the government to demand notification and approval for all future actions from the Mineral Resources Authority.
The company stated in an August 6 letter that permit procedures are advancing through discussions with Greenlandic authorities. The project will initially focus on one drilling site instead of two. Efforts continue to engage Greenlandic and Danish authorities, with comments sought by Newsweek from these parties and the White House.
Trump’s Involvement
Greenland Energy’s connections to Trump include figures linked to his past administration. Kenneth Griffin, CEO of Citadel, owns a significant stake in the company. Although he criticizes Trump, he donated $1 million to Trump’s inaugural committee in 2025. Additionally, the firm appointed Carol Craig to its board, who is tied to Trump’s missile defense plans. Chairman Larry Swets has business ties involving donations to Trump’s projects, though he denies close links. Recent content features Phil McGraw, Dr. Phil, who has historical support for Trump, hosting a documentary on the exploration project.
Trump’s Greenland Ambitions
Trump’s interest in Greenland is longstanding, viewing the territory’s control as crucial for US security. This has caused tension with European allies, who rejected US ownership proposals. Trump advocated for his goal with potential tariffs but backed off after reaching an agreement framework. Still, he persists in public messaging supporting US control, suggesting this will happen by his departure from office.
Oil Exploration Plans
Greenland is believed to hold untapped oil and gas resources. Estimates suggest Northeast Greenland possesses about 31 billion BOE of recoverable oil resources. In May, Governor Jeff Landry, Trump’s envoy, claimed Greenland could be exporting substantial oil, affecting global supply amidst geopolitics.
Established in 2024, Greenland Energy aims to explore the Jameson Land Basin, which holds potential similar to other major regions. However, Greenland halted new exploration licenses due to environmental concerns, but this project uses a legacy license purchased by 80 Mile, allowing further development with Greenland Energy’s financial and technical input.
Future Developments
Greenland Energy remains in talks for necessary approvals to proceed with its exploration. The Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources clarified that while discussions are positive, exploration is still underway, with requisite approvals pending for drilling. Official statements suggest it is unlikely equipment transfer or drilling will commence by 2026.
