Tegucigalpa, Honduras — Juan Orlando Hernández, the former president of Honduras, made a return to his home country after being granted a pardon by the United States. He was greeted by hundreds at the airport.
Four years ago, Hernández had been extradited and faced a narcotics-related trial in the U.S. Upon his return, he will also face the justice system in Honduras.
A large crowd gathered outside the Palmerola International Airport to welcome the former leader. The private plane carrying Hernández landed at 8:32 a.m. His family, including his wife, children, and mother, awaited him at the terminal.
Hernández was accompanied by his U.S. lawyer, Renato Stabile, and three Honduran generals. Stabile was the first to step off the plane, followed by Hernández, who waved to the crowd while walking along the tarmac.
Clad in a white shirt and blue jeans, Hernández first embraced his mother, Elvira Alvarado, after disembarking. He kissed his wife and hugged each of his children and grandchild. Together, they knelt at the edge of the runway, offering prayers of thanks for their reunion.
The former president took time to acknowledge airport staff before being whisked away in a vehicle to the Migration office for processing.
After completing migration formalities, Hernández traveled in a pickup truck, heavily guarded by security, to leave the airport. The crowd chanted his name, and many reached out to shake his hand. He expressed gratitude, saying, “Thank you, thank you.”
Expressing joy, Hernández told local media, “I am happy, thrilled to be in my homeland. I longed to return, but didn’t expect it like this. I thank God.” Supporters waved numerous flags of the National Party in his honor.
The former president, followed by a large vehicle convoy, proceeded to a farm where friends and allies awaited him. Along the route, a stage had been set where he and his family addressed the crowd.

He maintained his innocence, calling the accusations against him vengeance by those he had extradited.
Legal Challenges Ahead
Convicted to 45 years in prison in the United States, Hernández was awarded a presidential pardon by Donald Trump, who cited an unfair trial and allegations of a staged case by the Biden administration.
Hernández, 57, regained freedom on December 1, 2025, and expressed intent to reunite with his family in Honduras. A prior arrest warrant issued by the Honduran Supreme Court on November 28, 2023, hindered his return, but it was reactivated following his release.
His legal team in Honduras requested that he be allowed to voluntarily face charges of fraud and money laundering. A Supreme Court judge canceled the arrest warrant and an Interpol red alert following their appeal, enabling Hernández’s return.
Immediately after the resolution, Hernández announced his return plans through a social media video. “The moment has come; after four years, we will meet again,” he stated.
Hernández is due to appear before the judge on August 3 at 9:00 a.m. as part of an inquiry tied to Pandora II, a corruption scandal involving former senior officials who allegedly misused over 288 million lempiras (about $11 million) in public funds between 2010 and 2013.
The UFERCO investigation links Hernández, who served from 2014 to 2022, to receiving at least 62 million lempiras (over $2.3 million) for his political campaign through illegal means, such as fake companies and contracts.
