A Florida man on probation has been accused of first-degree murder following the alleged stalking, killing, and dismemberment of his 71-year-old stepfather. The discovery of three suitcases just before midnight on August 4 led authorities to suspect Jose Proano. These pieces of luggage were located near his mother and stepfather’s home in Orlando.
Investigation Unfolds
Around 23 hours before the discovery, Jorge Vazquez-Escutia’s family reported finding his phone, wallet, and keys at his home along with what seemed to be bloodstains on a fence outside. His cars remained parked with unlocked doors, indicating unusual circumstances. The family last saw him three days earlier and contacted the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. Friends of Proano shared shocking allegations, stating he confessed to them about killing his stepfather.
The sheriff’s office sought public help through social media, highlighting concerns for Vazquez-Escutia’s wellbeing due to his memory loss issues. Security footage from a neighbor’s camera revealed suspicious activities the day after Vazquez-Escutia was last seen. The footage showed a man in a black shirt jumping over Vazquez-Escutia’s back wall and later leaving with several suitcases, one containing what appeared to be a human arm.
Grisly Discoveries
The video captured the suspect carrying three heavy suitcases down the driveway. Investigators, piecing together a timeline, discovered Proano’s phone records placed him at the scene around the time of the recorded events. Court records reveal Proano traveled from Northport, 150 miles away, and reportedly acted erratically, making threats to his ex-wife. When meeting investigators, Proano expressed disdain for his stepfather, citing conflict over access to his mother and his schizophrenia, which triggered fears for his family.

“The person in the video isn’t me,” Proano insisted. However, he admitted his phone was present at the scene.
Authorities discovered the suitcases amid ongoing searches. A human head, identified as Vazquez-Escutia’s, was found inside one suitcase. Additional body parts were found in two other suitcases bearing Proano’s mother’s name on the tags.
Proano, currently held without bond in Orange County, has a criminal history including 2022 charges related to an armed burglary. His probation until 2027 is now violated due to the recent accusations, prompting a case reevaluation. His public defender has refrained from commenting further.
