Introduction
A couple from the San Francisco Bay Area shared a harrowing experience during their pilgrimage to Tibet. Anjana Raja and Pattabiraman Venkatesan recounted their near-death encounter with catastrophic flash flooding earlier this week in the mountainous region of Nepal and Tibet.
Devastating Floods
On Wednesday, a glacier in the Himalayas collapsed, causing torrential floods that swept through the border area of Nepal and Tibet. This disaster has led to the deaths of nearly 600 people. An estimated 2,500 individuals remain missing as rescue teams continue their frantic search for survivors.
Anjana Raja told CBS News, “I knew I was going to die.”
The U.S. State Department reported that approximately 90 Americans are among those missing.
Survivors’ Experience
Raja and Venkatesan were in Nepal’s Rasuwa District when they witnessed a massive wave approaching. Venkatesan compared the sight to a dark, black tsunami, initially mistaking it for a forest fire. As chaos erupted, they managed to escape their tour bus and sprinted towards higher ground.
Cellphone footage captured the terrifying scene of people being engulfed by the floodwaters, while others climbed to safety and were later rescued.
Raja and Venkatesan’s guide led them to a flat area atop a nearby mountain. The climb was treacherous, as Raja described it as difficult and Venkatesan noted the narrow and slippery path filled with mud and rocks.
Survival and Resilience
The couple spent the night in a goat shed with other survivors before getting airlifted out the next day. Remarkably, everyone from their tour bus survived.
Venkatesan reflected on their survival, considering it a miracle. He emphasized the importance of goodness and gratitude in life. “Be good, do good, think good,” Venkatesan said, urging others to appreciate life and its fleeting nature.
