First Day of School Across the U.S.

The start of a new school year marks a fresh beginning for students, teachers, and parents. From Los Angeles to Virginia, schools welcome students with a mix of traditions and new approaches.

Los Angeles, California

At Micheltorena Street Elementary in Los Angeles, Principal Nichole Sakellarion has introduced an early welcoming day for kindergarteners to ease their transition into school. Fifth graders, known as ‘toolbox coaches,’ assist the new students, guiding them through their first experiences. Gerald Gomez-Reina, a fifth grader, comforted new kindergarteners with his toy, Rocket the Raccoon, to help calm any nerves.

These efforts to make the first day smooth have paid off. Many kindergarteners entered the school gates without tears, reassured by their fifth-grade buddies.

Edmond, Oklahoma

In Edmond, a different kind of school bus is gaining popularity. Known as a bike bus, this initiative encourages students and parents to ride their bicycles to Will Rogers Elementary. First grader Hayden Raupe was excited about bypassing long car lines through this initiative. Families meet weekly to continue the tradition, promoting healthier and more engaging commutes.

Beaverton, Oregon

Beaverton High School, near Portland, provides new facilities for its students and staff. While the school boasts new features like large windows for natural light and adjustable classroom lighting, it also retains its 110-year-old bell. Special touches such as colorful mosaics help make the school warm and welcoming for its nearly 1,400 students.

Many students, like sophomore Andrew Perez, initially found themselves intimidated by the new setting. Yet, the visual and sensory cues within the building are designed to help them feel more at ease.

Charles City County, Virginia

In Virginia, Charles City Elementary rolled out the red carpet for students on their first day. Preschool teacher Kelly Orrell used a book titled The Kissing Hand to comfort her students and address their fears. The school also hosted a ‘boo-hoo breakfast’ for parents to express emotions and connect with others experiencing the same feelings as they leave their children for the first time.

Parents like Jovan Howard found comfort in these supportive efforts, leaving their kids with new hopes and excitement for the school year.
