Finding Self-Worth Beyond Family Perceptions

Finding Self-Worth Beyond Family Perceptions

For years, I dedicated myself to caring for my mother who suffered from Alzheimer’s. This experience profoundly shaped my life. Before her illness, my mother and younger brother often conveyed doubts about my capabilities. Over time, I internalized their perceptions.

Now, at 70, I reflect on how these familial opinions shaped my self-view. My mother’s passing marked the end of an era, and my relationship with my brother has since fractured, leaving us estranged. Despite this distance and loss, I continue to grapple with living inside the narrative they created about me.

The challenge lies in disentangling my identity from these overshadowing stories. Moving forward involves redefining myself, free from their judgments, while embracing a broader sense of self-worth.
