The Las Vegas Raiders have officially brought quarterback Fernando Mendoza on board with a contract valued at $57.27 million, fully guaranteed. As the top selection in the 2026 NFL draft, this move was anticipated, given the common practice of rookies joining their NFL teams through standardized deals. However, Mendoza’s signing is particularly significant for a Raiders franchise eager to reclaim their past glory and leave behind recent struggles.
TOM BRADY’S MESSAGE TO MENDOZA: EARN YOUR SPOT
Attending a press conference at the Raiders’ Headquarters in Henderson, Nevada, on April 24, 2026, Mendoza expressed his enthusiasm in a team-released video: “I’m excited to get this thing signed. Excited to be a part of the Silver and Black. Can’t wait. Appreciate you guys all support. Let’s get this thing rolling.”
But “rolling” in this context means embracing the challenge of earning his role. Mendoza isn’t guaranteed the starting quarterback position. That spot is currently filled by Kirk Cousins, a seasoned 14-year veteran who joined the Raiders on a one-year deal. His role is to bridge the gap while Mendoza acclimates to the NFL’s speed and complexity. Raiders officials have made it clear Mendoza must earn his place.
ON THE FIELD PREPARATION
Offensive coordinator Andrew Janocko, working closely with Cousins and Mendoza during minicamp, emphasized gradual integration. Mendoza will get some, but not a majority of, starting reps in training sessions. The objective is to assess his development and readiness.
“The role isn’t handed to him,” said a Raiders source. “We will evaluate Cousins’ performance weekly. If he excels, the transition to Mendoza may wait. But if Mendoza proves his skills, the opportunity will come.”
Fans anticipate seeing Mendoza play during the 2026 season. However, any delays in his debut could simply be a testament to Cousins’ performance, rather than a lack of readiness from Mendoza. The expectation remains for Mendoza to be the Raiders’ long-term future.
RAIDERS OPTIMISM AND TEAM SUPPORT
Fernando Mendoza has an invaluable resource in the form of minority owner and NFL legend Tom Brady, who has been supportive of the player’s progression. The Raiders have also executed substantial off-season changes, bolstering both their offensive line and defense. Additionally, they’ve managed to retain star edge rusher Maxx Crosby after a brief trade to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Crosby recently shared his excitement on social media, posting, “Go time,” signaling enthusiasm for the upcoming challenges.
Despite facing a tough AFC West division, home to the Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, and Los Angeles Chargers, the Raiders remain confident. A franchise source described the team as having “an arrow up” trajectory. Should Mendoza meet expectations, the Raiders aim to re-establish themselves as formidable contenders.
The journey for Mendoza and the Raiders commences this Thursday.
