A federal judge sharply criticized Trump administration officials for removing hundreds of trees from a historic golf course in Washington, D.C. The government’s actions have led to accusations of losing credibility with the court.
U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes expressed her frustration during a hearing concerning work at East Potomac Golf Links. The National Park Service had begun tree removal as part of renovation plans initiated by the administration.
Judge Reyes, appointed by former President Joe Biden, highlighted her previous instructions that the government should inform her before any significant demolition work commenced. She noted the removal of more than 500 trees without proper notice, saying, “This has cost the government all of its credibility.” She added her confusion and disappointment, stating, “I trusted you all not to do precisely what you have done.”
When Justice Department attorneys claimed ignorance regarding the tree-cutting details, Reyes countered, “Ignorance is not an excuse.” She ordered a halt to tree removal operations until at least 7 a.m. Tuesday, warning of contempt proceedings if her directive was violated.
This dispute revolves around plans to transform the 106-year-old public golf course into a championship-level venue.
