Federal agents have fired on at least 21 individuals, many while they were in vehicles, as part of President Trump’s deportation measures. These incidents have resulted in five deaths, including three U.S. citizens.
A recent incident involved the death of a Mexican man in Houston. This shooting marks the 21st occurrence in President Trump’s current term, beginning January 2025. Nearly all shootings involved agents firing at vehicles.
Details of the Houston Incident
Officials from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported an event on Tuesday at approximately 6:50 a.m. Officers attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Lorenzo Salgado Araujo for arrest. Their statement mentioned the driver ‘weaponized his vehicle’ in an attempt to run over an agent. The agent then fired at the vehicle.
“Weaponizing a vehicle” is a term frequently used by federal officials in similar cases. Often initial claims of assault or injury by officers are contested later in court.
No immediate evidence was presented to support the federal narrative about Araujo’s shooting. Rustin Rawlings, a spokesperson for the Houston Fire Department, stated Mr. Araujo suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen, was transported to a hospital, and subsequently died.
