Fear of God Essentials hoodies have become a popular status symbol among tweens and teens, surprising many parents with their price. Kinna Thomas, a mother of two, shared her thoughts on the cost with Business Insider, noting the expense seemed high for young children. The clothing line includes items priced from $33 for T-shirts to $130-$200 for some kids’ hoodies. Jerry Lorenzo founded the brand in 2011, later launching the Essentials line in 2018.
During an interview with Ssense, a luxury fashion site, Lorenzo explained that although the brand isn’t overtly Christian, his faith influences him. He said, “If someone asks me how Christianity fits into it, it just fits because it’s a part of who I am.” He emphasized that the brand is not meant to be a Christian clothing line, yet he attributes his brand’s unexpected success to his faith.
Thomas recalled her boys asking for Fear of God Essentials items in 2022 for Christmas. Initially surprised, she eventually purchased the clothes, noting they have become staples for her sons, Timmy and Julian, aged 15 and 16. Julian commented that the hoodies are “really popular” at his school because “they look clean without doing too much.” Timmy appreciated the simplicity and comfort, suggesting these are key reasons for their widespread appeal.
According to Business Insider, parents appreciate the brand for helping their children express themselves positively. Thomas mentioned her children attend a Christian private school where wearing Fear of God Essentials is allowed, unlike some other brands. Another parent, Amy Nachon, expressed her support for her son’s clothing choices, acknowledging that seventh grade is already challenging.
