Excitement Builds as 2026 World Cup Kicks Off Across North America

The highly anticipated 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup has begun in North America, drawing attention from soccer fans around the globe. The tournament, which now includes 48 national teams, is held across Mexico, the United States, and Canada. This is the first time the event has expanded from the previous 32-team format that was in place since 1998.

Opening Ceremonies and Matches

The World Cup hosts a series of opening ceremonies in three major cities. In Mexico City, before the Group A match between Mexico and South Africa, performers such as Shakira and Burna Boy will entertain the crowd at Estadio Azteca. The event begins at 11:30 a.m. local time and features other artists from the FIFA World Cup’s first album, including Alejandro Fernández and J Balvin.

In Toronto, the BMO Field hosts the ceremony before Canada’s match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Alanis Morissette and Michael Bublé are among the performers set to entertain fans before the 3 p.m. ET kickoff. Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, the United States begins its campaign against Paraguay. The show in Los Angeles features artists like Katy Perry and Future at SoFi Stadium. FIFA President Gianni Infantino highlighted the diversity of performers, celebrating music’s unifying power.

Group Stage Highlights

The 2026 tournament kicks off with a rematch between Mexico and South Africa. Both teams last faced off on June 11, 2010, ending in a 1-1 draw. Another Group A game features South Korea against Czechia at Guadalajara’s Akron Stadium. Key matches include Canada facing Bosnia and Herzegovina in Group B at the enlarged BMO Field on Friday. The U.S. match against Paraguay is their first World Cup match at home since 1994, where they last competed on home soil.

Security and Logistics

As the tournament unfolds, the U.S. enhances security measures. The FBI has deployed tactical teams across major cities, supporting security efforts. Fans attending matches, particularly at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts, should plan for enhanced security procedures.

FIFA has revised its rules on items fans can bring into stadiums. Initially, restrictions on water bottles were in place, leading to criticism. However, one soft, disposable, sealed water bottle up to 20 ounces is now permitted per spectator in U.S. and Canadian venues due to concerns over hot weather conditions.

Ticket Prices and Betting

Although ticket prices remain high, many fans are eager to witness the action in person. Phil Labas from the American Outlaws shared concerns over “punishing” pricing but expressed determination to support from the stands.

Bettors have a keen eye on the competition, following teams likely succeeding in the tournament. Economist Joachim Klement picked the Netherlands as a strong contender, citing their consistent performances and robust defense. The U.S., in Group D, faces challenges with a balanced set of teams but remains hopeful of advancing. Betting interest is projected to rise to $3.1 billion through online platforms.
