Excavation Set to Begin for Trump’s DC Monument Project Amid Legal Challenge

Preparations will soon start for the excavation of the site where the Trump administration aims to construct a tall memorial arch in Washington, D.C. This project has become controversial due to a lawsuit from opponents who claim it will interfere with nearby historic sight lines.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum announced that work would commence on the Great Triumphal Arch and Military Observation Deck located on Columbia Island. This area stands between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. “This will be one of the Great Pieces of American Architecture, honoring the history and significance of Arlington Cemetery and befitting the most powerful Capital in the World,” Burgum wrote on X, sharing mock-ups of the large 250-foot-tall arch.

The rendering for the arch displays a white structure with gold details. The phrase “ONE NATION UNDER GOD” is featured on top. A gold figure resembling Lady Liberty, complete with wings and a torch, is seen above, along with gold eagles spreading their wings outward.

The project is under scrutiny from three veterans and an architectural historian who argue that congressional authorization is needed but absent for this project. Nicolas Sansone, an attorney with the Public Citizen Litigation Group representing the plaintiffs, stated, “Congressional authorization is necessary and lacking for this project.”

Sansone expressed their readiness to inform the court about the need for intervention, emphasizing that construction should not proceed without further legal clearance.

The National Park Service released a 24-page report backing the concept for the arch. However, the report recognized that the monument could have “direct and indirect adverse effects on the sight lines of historic properties.”

Burgum defended the project in posts on X, explaining how the idea for such a monument has existed for decades. He referenced earlier congressional efforts and historical reports discussing building a memorial. According to the secretary, numerous cities, including Athens, London, Madrid, New Delhi, Paris, and Rome, prominently feature arches.

Burgum noted, “Washington, DC, is the only major Western capital without an arch. After 125 years, the most powerful capital in the world will have the most spectacular and beautiful arch of them all!”

The proposal is part of Trump’s broader initiative, which has included the renaming of the Kennedy Center, creating a new White House ballroom, and renovating the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
