Disneyland’s Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run offers an immersive ‘Star Wars’ experience, celebrated for its interactive arcade-style fun. The attraction has received a comprehensive upgrade aimed at enhancing visuals, increasing interactive elements, and introducing new characters. This upgrade is available starting Friday.
Originally launched in 2019, Smugglers Run allows six players to handle the Millennium Falcon, made famous by Han Solo from the original ‘Star Wars’ trilogy. While Solo is absent, Din Djarin, also known as the Mandalorian, and Grogu, a character fondly called ‘Baby Yoda,’ now feature in the attraction.
This update coincides with the release of the new film ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu,’ which brings enhanced unpredictability, humor, and dynamic gameplay. The changes reflect feedback gathered by Walt Disney Imagineering, the division responsible for theme park attractions. Guests now have more control over their experience during the ride.
Asa Kalama, a creative executive from Imagineering, explains the collaborative focus of the ride, where groups undertake various tasks such as pilot, gunner, or engineer roles. The recent enhancements address past criticisms by refining each role and the overall narrative.
The initial version of Smugglers Run received praise, especially for the pilot roles that allow control over the Millennium Falcon’s movements. However, the engineer role was previously criticized for lacking engagement and involvement in a simplistic errand storyline with Hondo Ohnaka.
The enhanced Smugglers Run now offers multiple mission choices. Guests can visit one of three ‘Star Wars’ locations: Coruscant, Bespin, or the remains of the second Death Star near Endor. This new option adds variety and surprise to the attraction, with engineers deciding the destination.
Utilizing Epic’s Unreal Engine, each location within Smugglers Run features detailed, immersive visuals. Players engage in dynamic pursuits where the Mandalorian confronts pirates and former Imperial officers. Regardless of the chosen path, the experience exudes energy and engagement.
Flight controls have been adjusted to be more beginner-friendly, ensuring a cinematic experience. Previously, inexperienced guests could crash the ship repeatedly; however, new settings offer guidance without limiting control.
Kalama highlights that all players, regardless of skill level, can enjoy a cinematic ride. The previous version often subjected poor fliers to reprimands from Ohnaka, a feature now minimized to reduce any feeling of chastisement.
The narrative adventure now commences with training on Tatooine, before assisting the Mandalorian in intergalactic conflicts with pirates and ex-Imperial agents. The differing locations offer contrasting tones and aesthetics, whether navigating the sci-fi effervescence of Coruscant or the intimidating ambiance of the Death Star’s remains.
Passengers in gunner or engineer positions will find additional footage showcasing Grogu, depicted as a laid-back ally amidst the action. Each planetary setting delivers distinct vibes, providing unique atmospheric experiences to guests as outlined by Kalama.
Featuring high-speed chases led by the Mandalorian, the enhanced ride maintains its length of five minutes but presents richer scenic routes through locales like Bespin’s fiery skies adorned with natural wonders.
Smugglers Run was always filled with stimuli, often diverting attention from wall controls adjacent to passengers’ seats into riveting battles. Still, the amendments introduce a cohesive yet bustling ambiance that presents players with choices, be it selecting a location or enjoying Grogu’s antics.
Matt Martin from Lucasfilm adds that within these planetary visits, guests can opt to explore different pathways. This ability promises varying and expansive experiences each time the ride is enjoyed.
The Smugglers Run revamp aligns with broader adaptations within Galaxy’s Edge, incorporating beloved characters like Darth Vader, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Leia, thus enhancing the interactive character-driven environment despite altering its initial real-time narrative focus.
