Donnie Wahlberg remains amazed that New Kids on the Block Day still occurs years after Massachusetts governor Michael Dukakis declared April 24 as the band’s official day.
Recently, Wahlberg shared a harrowing event that unfolded as he and seven others were aboard a private jet. The plane skidded off a runway at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas. Wahlberg had just concluded a performance with New Kids on the Block in their Las Vegas residency’s final show.
Taking to social media, Wahlberg recounted the scare and expressed gratitude towards God and the pilots who averted a major disaster. He received numerous concerned messages, acknowledging the warmth and care from fans. He emphasized, “I appreciate your concern and well wishes.”
“We were taking off but didn’t get up in the air, ran out of runway,” Wahlberg explained in a video after the incident. “I’m just going to tell you these pilots saved our lives.”
The flight was a tense experience, avoiding obstacles like trucks and heavy equipment near the runway’s end. Though the plane sustained some damage, Wahlberg, his team, and friends emerged unharmed.
Wahlberg highlighted the role of Las Vegas’s emergency personnel who swiftly responded. He stated solemnly, “All glory to God! By His grace, we are all ok.” His wife, Jenny McCarthy, echoed this gratitude, writing, “God is so good!”
The airport spokesperson, Monika Bertaki, confirmed the aircraft’s skid off the runway and subsequent contact with the perimeter fence. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The incident led to the temporary closure of runways 1R and 1L for inspection, although they later reopened. An air traffic control recording captured the urgency, with a voice stating, “Aborting. Aborting,” followed by confirmation that emergency vehicles were en route.
This event underscores how skilled pilots and emergency measures bring safety amidst potential threats. Wahlberg’s relief and acknowledgment of this highlight the dedication of those ensuring passenger safety.
