The Los Angeles Dodgers have strengthened their roster by acquiring Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers. ESPN reported this move on Saturday evening, marking a significant trade involving the back-to-back American League Cy Young winner. Skubal will now join the two-time defending World Series champions as they prepare for another title run.
The deal sends Skubal to Los Angeles, with the Tigers receiving three prospects in return. These include outfielder Zyhir Hope and right-hand pitchers Brady Smith and River Ryan. Hope, age 21, is currently ranked as the No. 25 prospect in Major League Baseball.
Skubal is still recovering from elbow surgery, performed in May, but he returned to pitching by mid-June. For the current season, he is 7-5 as a starter. He will not receive a qualifying offer from the Dodgers since the trade occurred during the season. His remaining salary of $32 million stays with him.
This trade adds a top pitcher to the Dodgers’ rotation, yet it raises concerns among other teams about competitive balance. The fact that the Dodgers secured Skubal for three prospects – a deal other contenders could have achieved – frustrates non-Dodger fans watching the postseason race.
