Division II Football Player Dies After Traumatic Injury

Tyler Ulrich, a 21-year-old sophomore from Southern Nazarene University (SNU) in Oklahoma, died five days after sustaining a “traumatic injury” during a football game. The university shared the news of Ulrich’s passing, without specifying the exact cause, although he suffered a head injury in the game.

Southern Nazarene, based in Bethany, Oklahoma, expressed deep sorrow over the loss. “It is with heavy hearts that we share the loss of our SNU football player, Tyler Ulrich,” SNU Athletics announced on its social media account. The announcement further asked for thoughts and prayers for Ulrich’s family, friends, and teammates.

Dustin Hada, the head coach of SNU’s football program, paid tribute to Ulrich online, describing him as a “man of God” and “the ultimate example of quiet strength.” Ulrich was remembered for his loyalty, hard work, and joyful spirit.

Ulrich’s father, Mark, shared a message of gratitude for the love and prayers his family received as Tyler fought for recovery. He conveyed the devastating news that Tyler passed away at 11:13 a.m., despite the immense support and hope for a miracle.

The incident leading to Ulrich’s injury occurred during a game where play was halted for nearly an hour as he received medical attention before being transported to a hospital. Ulrich was in his third season with SNU, having started in 16 out of 20 games, including six starts in the current season, and accumulating 36 tackles.

In response to Ulrich’s death, SNU has canceled its upcoming game against Southwestern Oklahoma State. This decision reflects the significant impact Ulrich’s passing has had on the team and the broader campus community.
