Attempted Mass Shooting at Hindu Temple Foiled by Police

Authorities have intercepted an attempted mass shooting by a transgender 19-year-old suspect, identified as Alexandros Paporakis, outside a Hindu temple near Chicago. A coworker’s tip played a key role in preventing the attack, according to police reports.

Arrest and Charges

On Sunday, law enforcement arrested Paporakis in Palatine following the alleged plan to attack a Hindu temple in Aurora, a suburb of Chicago. Paporakis faces charges of making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of a weapon. A Cook County judge ordered Paporakis to be held without bond, ensuring necessary jailhouse healthcare for the teenager’s hormone therapy and mental health treatments.

Planned Attack

Prosecutors state that Paporakis equipped with a modified rifle and about 300 rounds of ammunition, alongside body armor and tactical gear, drove to the target site. The rifle malfunctioned, causing Paporakis to retreat. Attempts to resolve the gun issue were followed by a communication with a colleague about the intent to proceed with the attack.

Prevention and Investigation

Alerted by a suspicious message from Paporakis, coworkers at Taco Bell informed the Mount Prospect Police. This tip led to police obtaining a search warrant, ultimately resulting in Paporakis’ detention before any attack could occur. Authorities commended the tipster and encouraged vigilance and reporting of suspicious activities.

“I want to offer my personal, sincerest thanks to the individual who stepped forward,” said Lucas Rothaar, FBI Chicago Field Office acting special agent in charge, acknowledging the successful prevention efforts by law enforcement.

A search of Paporakis’ residence revealed firearms, ammunition, and tactical gear. An eight-page manifesto detailing the intended attack and expressing white supremacist views was also discovered, targeting various racial and ethnic groups.

Judicial Proceedings

Paporakis remains in custody as per the judge’s ruling, with the next court date scheduled for October 30.

Temple’s Response

The temple, acknowledging the recent threat, has heightened security measures. The safety of devotees, staff, and volunteers is prioritized with increased armed security on the premises, according to an update on the temple’s website.
