Deshaun Watson’s Struggles Continue as Browns Fall to Jaguars

Deshaun Watson had an opportunity to demonstrate the Cleveland Browns’ faith in their $230 million commitment to him on Sunday. However, the game ended in a 34-10 defeat against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Watson completed 16 of 22 passes for 205 yards, throwing one touchdown with an interception and a fumble. Though some NFL players had worse performances, the Cleveland offense struggled to advance the ball throughout the game.

While the performance cannot be solely blamed on Watson, the result was not reassuring for a polarizing figure facing a crucial moment in Cleveland. According to Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports, Browns head coach Todd Monken intends to offer Watson ample time to prove himself. “On my visit to Browns training camp, multiple people told me first-year coach Todd Monken planned to give Watson a long leash,” Vacchiano noted. “So expect him to remain the starter at least through October — for better or, more likely, for worse.”

Browns fans might not receive this news well. Watson previously raised concerns by criticizing the fanbase as “disrespectful” and “personal” following a preseason loss to the Bills. Given his off-field history, Watson cannot afford underwhelming performances.

The situation suggests that the organization might eventually turn to Shedeur Sanders during this season. This will depend largely on Watson’s future performances. If the Browns manage to secure wins, fans may overlook the current struggles. Yet, for Browns fans, Watson is on a short leash, despite his coach’s confidence.
