Democrats Seek Support from Wealthy Donors in Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard

Democrats have intensified their fundraising activities in Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, two affluent Massachusetts islands, as they prepare for the upcoming November elections.

Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard are popular spots for political fundraising, and Democrats have been leveraging the islands’ wealthy donor networks. As of June 30, Democratic committees had about $136 million in cash combined, while Republicans held roughly $277 million, according to federal filings.

This summer, prominent figures such as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Texas Senate candidate James Talarico, and Rep. Seth Moulton have been seen attending fundraising events on the islands.

The fundraising events draw criticism from opponents who argue that some politicians are prioritizing national ambitions over local responsibilities.

Sen. Jon Ossoff attended a fundraiser in Nantucket on August 29 hosted by Elizabeth Frawley Bagley, a Biden-appointed U.S. ambassador to Brazil.

In Martha’s Vineyard, former President Barack Obama joined an event on August 31 hosted by former Attorney General Eric Holder for the National Democratic Redistricting Committee. Meanwhile, potential 2028 presidential candidate Wes Moore attended a Democratic National Committee fundraiser there on August 8.

Maryland GOP criticized Moore for attending national events instead of focusing on local concerns, suggesting his attention is on a future presidential run.

Josh Turek, Iowa state representative and Democratic Senate candidate, also made an appearance in Nantucket during the Iowa State Fair, sparking interest in his fundraising activities.

Local Democratic donors Frank Herron and Sandra Urie hosted a Nantucket fundraising event for Rep. Moulton, building on their previous support for the Democratic National Committee in 2022.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama visited the island on August 23 for her book promotion events. The Obamas have owned a vacation home on the Vineyard since 2019.

Nantucket has been a frequent destination for the Biden family over the years. Former First Lady Jill Biden promoted her memoir on the island in July.

Republicans have also engaged in fundraising in Nantucket. In 2022, Vice President JD Vance, alongside Florida Senator Rick Scott and other Senate candidates, attended similar events.
