Democratic Representative Urges Resistance to Socialist Influence

A senior House Democrat, Rep. Tom Suozzi from New York, advises his party to oppose the increasingly influential socialist wing within it. Suozzi, in an interview with Fox News Digital, emphasized his disagreement with the ideas of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), comparing them to the House Freedom Caucus on the Republican side. He criticized the DSA’s use of ‘democratic’ in its name, arguing that their principles are primarily socialist.

Suozzi stated, “Democrats must address the challenge from this group. I oppose the notion of them using ‘democratic’ because the Democratic Party should protect its identity,” he remarked. He highlighted the importance of confronting and clearly disassociating from the DSA’s policies.

Suozzi’s comments arise as DSA-affiliated candidates gain momentum in primaries, defeating established progressives in areas like New York and Colorado. Republican efforts to exploit this internal Democratic conflict are underway, and Suozzi cautions against underestimating the DSA’s growing presence.

“I prioritize action over worry, clearly stating ‘that’s not us,’ and confronting false perceptions directly,” Suozzi explained. He rejected the notion of dismissing the DSA as a minor influence confined to deep-blue districts.

Suozzi belongs to the weakening moderate faction in Congress and co-chairs the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, focused on legislative cooperation between parties. His role makes him a key target for Republicans in the upcoming elections.

Suozzi’s district, located in Long Island’s affluent suburbs, was carried by President Trump in the past election. He advises Democrats to focus on policy impacts like rising living costs rather than person-focused opposition against Trump.

Meanwhile, Republicans warn that a Democrat-led House would enable the socialist wing, pushing unpopular policies. New York City Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, is often cited as a threat by conservatives. However, Suozzi’s early repudiation of Mamdani’s policies aims to mitigate this strategy.

Suozzi initiated ‘The Promise to America,’ securing commitments from Congressional and state officials to adhere to capitalist, lawful, and mainstream American values. By organizing effectively, Suozzi believes the Democratic Party can resist the socialist agenda.

Suozzi is facing Republican Mike LiPetri, endorsed by Trump, in his re-election campaign. Elizabeth Elkind, a politics reporter for Fox News Digital, covers the House of Representatives.
