A part of a SpaceX rocket is on a collision course with the moon, marking an unusual event where a human-made object is poised to accidentally strike the lunar surface. Such occurrences are rare, although the moon’s cratered appearance shows its history of enduring numerous impacts.
The object in question is the defunct section of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, which initially launched from the Space Force Station’s Launch Complex 40 in Cape Canaveral, Florida, on July 21. This planned encounter with the moon will be only the second known instance of a rocket inadvertently crashing into the moon.
SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets are commonly used for various missions, including satellite deployments and crewed spaceflights. Despite their reliability, the aftermath of rocket stages often involves them falling back to Earth or, as in this case, deviating towards other celestial bodies.
