Wisconsin Democrats selected Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley as their gubernatorial nominee over state Rep. Francesca Hong. Crowley’s nomination represents a moderate choice in the battleground state.
Hong, associated with the Democratic Socialists of America, had led in polls. However, retiring Democratic Gov. Tony Evers and other party leaders supported Crowley, calling him “the future of the party.” Crowley will compete against Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany, who has support from President Donald Trump. This election is expected to gain nationwide attention.
At a unity breakfast in Middleton, Crowley thanked Hong for her contributions. He emphasized the importance of uniting the party: “We may not agree on everything, but we can come to the negotiating table.” He credited Evers as a crucial factor in his primary victory and expressed readiness to contrast his platform with Tiffany’s.
Crowley started his career as a community organizer before joining the Wisconsin State Assembly. He made history as the first Black person elected Milwaukee County executive. His campaign platforms include affordable housing, healthcare expansion, clean energy, and strong voting rights.
Initially, Crowley withdrew from the race in July, endorsing Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez. After her withdrawal, Crowley reentered the race, encouraged by his wife who viewed a red bird as a sign from God. His campaign prioritizes solutions over division, advocating for broad cooperation among Democrats, Republicans, and independents.
Democratic leaders, including the Democratic Governors Association (DGA) Chair Andy Beshear and Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Devin Remiker, rallied behind Crowley. They believe his victory in the primary shows he is ready to defeat Tiffany and maintain Democratic control of the governor’s office.
Crowley’s campaign manager, Garren Randolph, highlighted Crowley’s focus on unity and problem-solving over extremism associated with Trump and Tiffany. Crowley’s team is committed to building a coalition to win in November.
