The Dallas Cowboys continue to wrestle with defensive issues dating back to the 2025 season. A home loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on “Thursday Night Football” has spurred a coaching change. Veteran NFL coach Mike Pettine has joined the Cowboys as a senior defensive assistant, collaborating with defensive coordinator Christian Parker. Parker, facing challenges in his first year, seeks improvement through this addition to the staff.
“It’s something we’ve been discussing for a long time,” head coach Brian Schottenheimer explained regarding Pettine’s hiring. “We had convinced Pettine that joining us was logical.” Schottenheimer emphasized getting the right fit was crucial, expressing confidence in Pettine’s potential to add experience and value.

This move aligns with Parker’s initial aspirations when he was hired in January. At 34, Parker became the youngest defensive coordinator in Cowboys history and desired a familiar face like Pettine on his staff. Parker began his NFL career as a quality control coach for the Green Bay Packers, where Pettine served as defensive coordinator.
Pettine retired before the 2026 season when Parker was forming his team. The Cowboys reached out to Pettine again after a loss to rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels and the Buccaneers, leading to Pettine’s decision to end his retirement. Previously, Pettine worked as assistant head coach for the Minnesota Vikings under Kevin O’Connell from 2022 to the last season. Before that, he was a senior defensive assistant with the Chicago Bears in 2021.
The Cowboys aim to improve their defensive performance, not replace Parker as defensive coordinator. Teamwork with Pettine is hoped to bring better results on the field. Dallas has allowed the second-most yards per game (395.4) in the NFL, with only the Detroit Lions giving up more. Their run defense is the league’s worst, surrendering 168.4 yards per game. They are 26th in points allowed per game (27.2).
Dallas has relied on Dak Prescott and the offense for wins, ranking seventh in points per game (27.6). Despite Parker’s strong communication and scheme, improvements in defensive results are sought by owner Jerry Jones and others invested in the team’s success.
Schottenheimer stated, “When you bring someone into this role, trust between the coordinator and head coach is essential. Without that, collaboration is ineffective.” The connection between Pettine and Parker stems from their time on Rex Ryan’s New York Jets staff, promising productive cooperation.
Pettine was content with retirement, yet discussions over past weeks led to his decision to join the Cowboys. They face Pettine and Parker’s former team, the Packers, in “Sunday Night Football” in Week 6.
