New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has faced criticism for not distancing himself from Gustavo Gordillo, co-chair of New York City’s Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Gordillo is accused of failing to pay thousands in rent for a Crown Heights apartment, while his family reportedly spent $1.4 million renovating a townhouse where he resides. This situation is seen as conflicting with the socialist housing agenda he promotes.
Mamdani commented that those working towards a ‘more affordable life’ and a ‘fairer life’ for New Yorkers are welcome in the effort. However, when pressed further, he avoided condemning Gordillo’s alleged actions and ended the conversation with a brief remark.
History with Mamdani and Legal Issues
Gordillo, an Ivy League graduate and NYC-DSA co-chair, regularly interacted with Mamdani during campaign efforts. He even served on Mamdani’s Economic Development & Workforce Development transition committee. Gordillo is involved in a Brooklyn Housing Court case, accused by a former landlord of failing to pay $5,000 rent for a $2,500-a-month apartment while renovations were underway at his townhouse.
Criticism and Calls for Resignation
Critics, such as Rev. Kevin McCall, have pointed out double standards within the DSA. McCall argues the allegations against Gordillo raise significant doubts about his transparency and accountability. He emphasizes that DSA leaders should publicly address these issues and urge Gordillo’s resignation.
Issues with Gordillo’s Worker Credentials
The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers revealed that Gordillo’s apprenticeship was terminated due to lack of participation. Additionally, Gordillo reportedly secured a $95,000 salary from NYC-DSA without disclosing the termination. Criticisms intensified when it was discovered that nonunion contractors were used for the townhouse renovation, and the site faced a city stop-work order due to permit issues.
A source close to the union criticized Gordillo’s intentions, suggesting he occupied a position that could have benefited a deserving individual.
