A recent interaction between Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani during a 9/11 memorial event has led to widespread criticism. Some interpreted their apparent levity during the solemn reading of victims’ names as disrespectful.
During the event, a television feed displayed a young man mourning, followed by footage of Ocasio-Cortez and Mamdani appearing to smile and laugh. Their conversation was not audible, but the imagery sparked backlash.
Steve Guest, a former advisor to Sen. Ted Cruz, commented on the incident, calling it “disgraceful”. Others, including Meghan McCain, expressed surprise and disappointment at their behavior during such a solemn occasion.
Former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani’s security chief, Michael Ragusa, defended the politicians, claiming the video was out of context. He tweeted that they were merely greeting each other and noted other politicians from both parties were joking nearby.
The Pittsburgh Republican Committee and Spencer Pratt voiced their disapproval, linking the incident to previous calls for Mamdani to skip the event. Pratt accused the politicians of lacking respect for the country and its citizens.
Other local politicians, such as Councilwoman Inna Vernikov, shared their dismay over the incident. Vernikov remarked on the insensitivity displayed given the families’ ongoing grief.
Retired security officers had also urged both Mamdani and Gov. Hochul to avoid Ground Zero during the memorial. The controversy continued to unfold as critics like Richard Sementa and Rep. Randy Fine added their voices to the uproar.
Rep. Wesley Hunt emphasized that 9/11 is not an occasion for political showmanship, underlining its solemn significance.
The debate over the incident intensified as people voiced opinions on social media. Some criticized the timing of their joviality alongside a mourner’s evident pain.
Efforts to reach AOC and Mamdani for their comments were unsuccessful. The discussion generated significant attention, with various reactions across political lines.
