Controversial Comments from Hasan Piker
Far-left Twitch streamer Hasan Piker recently downplayed Hamas’ anti-women and anti-LGBTQ policies during a CNN interview. Piker, who is gaining influence within the Democratic Party, appeared in “The Left Insurgency,” a segment from “The Whole Story With Anderson Cooper.” He spoke with reporter Donie O’Sullivan about his controversial rhetoric regarding Hamas.
In April, a bipartisan House resolution condemned Piker’s comments, which some lawmakers viewed as supportive of the terror group. Piker stated in response, “I wouldn’t say I express support for all of Hamas’s actions… The Palestinian resistance largely does have an internationally recognized right to resist.” He acknowledged violations, including war crimes committed by Hamas. However, he emphasized the Palestinians’ military right to resist.
“It’s not an endorsement of their domestic policies,” Piker said. “Every Palestinian, regardless of their disagreements with Hamas, will always say that the Israeli occupation is the greatest problem they’re facing.”
Hasan Piker’s Controversial Statements
O’Sullivan highlighted Piker’s past remarks, citing a House resolution that referenced Piker calling Hamas “a thousand times better than… Israel.” He reiterated his views, stating, “I’m a harm-reduction voter… I would vote for Hamas over Israel every single time,” citing the adverse impact of Israeli policies on Palestinians.
Despite criticism, Piker defended his position, arguing that his focus was on opposition to Zionism and what he views as fascist ideology. He stated, “These guys can’t defend that… they attack its prominent critics.”
Public Reactions and Condemnations
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) condemned Piker’s comments, highlighting the influence of his large following. An ADL spokesperson expressed concerns over Democratic officials’ silence: “Every candidate and elected official who platforms Piker… signals that this rhetoric is acceptable. It is not and never should be.”
The American Jewish Committee (AJC) also criticized Piker’s stance, emphasizing that support for terror groups should not be debated: “Support for a terrorist organization is not a political viewpoint to be debated; it is a line that must not be crossed.”
Piker, known for his socialist views, has campaigned with various Democratic politicians. However, his statements, including past comments on the 9/11 attacks, have sparked significant controversy. Democratic strategist James Carville even suggested a potential party departure if Piker’s influence continues to grow.
