Colorado socialist candidate, Melat Kiros, recently encouraged more immigrants with roots in the global south to take political office in the United States. She addressed the subject while participating in the Wa’Ela Tigrai event in Denver, discussing her congressional campaign and questioning the U.S.’s exploitative practices.
Kiros gained attention after defeating incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette in a Democratic primary. She highlighted the experiences of House members such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, emphasizing the need for diverse representation to instigate global change. “There’s a certain reckoning that we are going to have to have with the global world order,” Kiros stated. She believes representation from those who inherently understand American exploitation is vital for progress.
“Getting more immigrants into office” and “getting more people who have heritage in the global south into office” are key steps in promoting this understanding, she asserted. Her campaign, backed by the Democratic Socialists of America, marked success in defeating several incumbent Democrats in primary elections for the 2026 midterms.
During the event, Kiros shared her anti-capitalist views, influenced by her background as an attorney. She recounted how her time in law school made her realize systemic issues were not exceptions but the norm. Despite early disillusionment, she was motivated by a cultural spirit of resilience. “The spirit of our community and our culture is to fight and to never give up,” she declared.
Kiros, previously dismissed from Sidley Austin law firm for critiquing actions against campus antisemitism, concluded that she would prefer to “go down fighting” no matter the outcome of her candidacy. This stance is central to her campaign and reflects her commitment to challenging established systems.
