Colin Kaepernick Discusses Memoir and Experiences at Detroit Event

Colin Kaepernick and Jemele Hill engaged in a conversation at the National Black Footwear Forum in Detroit, Michigan, on Saturday night. Their dialogue highlighted issues of racism and Kaepernick’s personal experiences detailed in his upcoming memoir, “The Perilous Fight.” The event did not allow questions from the audience, and OutKick reporters were present to cover the discussion.

During their conversation, Hill expressed her reaction to a story in Kaepernick’s memoir regarding his mother’s desire for him to date singer Taylor Swift. Kaepernick’s narrative explained how his mother encouraged him to engage with a girl like Swift, suggesting a preference for white women, which was contrary to his own interests.

OutKick acquired a copy of Kaepernick’s new book, where he recounts the story: “Now that I had my own car, it was time for me to embrace another teenage rite of passage: a girlfriend. I started seeing a very cute Black girl named Crystal. Right away, I noticed how different I felt with her than in my own home. I could talk to Crystal, really talk to her, without having to explain myself; it was a remarkable discovery, being understood up front and without question. When I visited her home, I was stunned by how warm and welcoming her family was. I immediately felt comfortable there,” he begins.

Kaepernick elaborates on the contrasting experiences he had with Crystal and Lindsay, his mother’s friend’s daughter: “My mother convinced me to ask Lindsay, the daughter of one of her friends, to the next formal dance. Lindsay was white. When I brought that picture home, my mother promptly plastered it on the wall for all to see. In her mind, Crystal was just a phase. Lindsay was the kind of girl I should want.”

Reflecting on his experiences, Kaepernick expressed disappointment over his mother’s inability to see his true self. Years later, even as a professional NFL player, his mother suggested he should pursue Taylor Swift because they would be “perfect together.” Despite this advice, Kaepernick remained true to his preferences and experiences.

The event also saw Kaepernick addressing his upbringing with white parents. He shared that they did not comprehend or support his “blackness” and were unsupportive of his national anthem protest when it began. Kaepernick’s journey to the NFL amidst such challenges highlights his resilience and determination.

Hill, on her part, did not question Kaepernick’s views. Instead, she defended his performance, attributing it to injuries, and encouraged the Atlanta Falcons to consider him for a quarterback position.
