Christopher Atkins, the actor known for his role in “The Blue Lagoon,” recently shared insights about his career during an event at the Fanboy Expo Knoxville in Tennessee, as reported by People magazine. The 65-year-old actor discussed how his drinking habits affected his career, specifically losing the lead role in the 1984 film “Footloose” to Kevin Bacon.
Atkins revealed to the panel that the filmmakers of “Footloose” intended to meet with him before finalizing their casting choice. However, his drinking hindered his ability to attend the meeting. “I was partying too much,” he admitted. “They wanted to see me, but I was in no shape to meet them. I blew that opportunity.” As a result, the filmmakers passed on him, and the role went to Kevin Bacon.
Atkins, who has been sober for nearly 40 years, also reminisced about his early success with “The Blue Lagoon.” In 1980, at just 18, he starred opposite Brooke Shields, marking his film debut. Despite having no prior acting experience or interest, he successfully transitioned from modeling to acting.
“I didn’t even know what a camera looked like,” he recalled. “My passion was baseball. Acting wasn’t part of my plan.” His life changed dramatically after “The Blue Lagoon,” with increased public attention and media scrutiny. “We became the talk of the town, featured on every magazine,” he said.
The film, known for its controversial depiction of youthful exploration, utilized techniques to address concerns about nudity. Atkins explained, “It was natural given the setting. The director made the process comfortable, aiming for authenticity.” Despite mixed reviews, “The Blue Lagoon” was a commercial success, earning over $58 million worldwide.
Reflecting on his journey, Atkins expressed contentment with his career choices. While he prioritized being a father over chasing stardom, he acknowledged having worked in more than 100 movies and shows. “I wanted to be a dad more than anything,” he shared. His focus now includes pursuing new projects, including possibly making his own film, enhancing his lasting legacy.
Atkins remains proud of his accomplishments, stating, “I’ve been blessed with an extensive career, and now I aim to check off my final goal of making a film.”
