Chris Rock recently spoke about the hidden challenges in Los Angeles, expressing a concern about the city’s darker side that many choose to ignore. In an interview with Variety, the comedian discussed the complicated nature of fame, noting how the pursuit has evolved over the years.
Rock observed, “Fame’s a complicated thing. I’ve seen the switch in my lifetime.” He remarked on the change, stating that aspiring Hollywood personalities once aimed for greatness as singers, actors, or comedians, but now often seek fame for its own sake, assuming greatness as a given.
“L.A. attracts a dark ‘underbelly.’ It’s got the best weather in the world. But it also attracts an underbelly that people want to pretend doesn’t exist.”
The comedian shared his perspective on Los Angeles, noting its dual character. While the city boasts beautiful weather and appealing aspects, it also harbors a hidden underside. Rock maintains homes in New York and Los Angeles, expressing his fondness for certain parts of the West Coast.
“Everybody Hates Chris” star Rock is currently directing an indie film titled Misty Green. The film tells the story of a former actress living in Los Angeles who finds herself destitute. Rock emphasized the film’s focus on Los Angeles’ skewed priorities, illustrated by the presence of multimillion-dollar real estate properties juxtaposed against homelessness.
Reflecting on the 2022 Academy Awards incident, Rock addressed the moment when Will Smith slapped him after a joke made about Jada Pinkett Smith. “I wish nothing would have happened,” Rock shared, acknowledging the event coincided with Smith’s Best Actor win.
Chris Rock expressed a broader view regarding life’s challenges, suggesting his personal trials are minor amidst other societal issues such as homelessness. He noted, “Me having a bad day is not the biggest — it’s not that important.”
Rock further mentioned his reluctance to return to the Oscars unless nominated. “I’m not getting nominated…the only way I’ll go back is if I’m nominated,” he explained, underscoring the importance of managing expectations.
