The Chicago White Sox finished their homestand with a loss, falling to the Kansas City Royals 5-4 at Rate Field on Sunday. A crowd of 27,301 witnessed a close game where Miguel Vargas added a two-run home run and scored twice despite the defeat. The Sox concluded the series with their tenth consecutive home series victory, winning two out of three games against the Royals.
Though the Sox have faced competition in the American League Central, they are now tied with the Cleveland Guardians for first place, owing to Cleveland’s 6-5 victory against the Seattle Mariners. The Sox maintain a record of 43-39, while the Guardians stand at 44-40.
Anthony Kay’s Struggle on the Mound
White Sox starting pitcher Anthony Kay faced challenges during his outing on Sunday. He expressed frustration about pitching from behind, which allowed the Royals to capitalize. Kay gave up five runs, four of which were earned, and allowed seven hits, struck out two, and walked one over 3 2/3 innings.
The game saw frequent lead changes early on, with Vargas bringing the Sox ahead 2-1 with his first-inning homer. Yet, errors such as one by shortstop Colson Montgomery in the second inning contributed to the Royals taking the lead 3-2 temporarily. The Sox reclaimed a 4-3 lead in the second inning with Kyle Teel’s two-run broken-bat single, only for the Royals to level the score again with Isaac Collins’ RBI double in the third. Carter Jensen’s RBI double in the fourth gave the Royals the definitive edge, winning 5-4.
Despite the challenges faced, Manager Will Venable acknowledged the Royals’ effective use of the field, putting Kay under pressure with two-strike hits. The White Sox went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring positions, which Venable noted as challenging due to the Royals’ bullpen efforts.
Contrasting Victories in the Series
The two victories that the Sox secured against the Royals showcased different strategies. First baseman Jacob Gonzalez played a crucial role in Saturday’s 2-1 triumph, marking his first career walk-off hit. Prior attempts saw him hit walk-off groundouts or sacrifice flies, making this hit noteworthy. Gonzalez’s single drove in the game-winning run, contributing to the Sox’s seventh walk-off win of the season.
The team’s Friday victory was achieved with contributions from several players during a 22-1 win. Gonzalez and Miguel Vargas each provided five RBIs, while Tristan Peters excelled with six RBIs. Elias Sports Bureau highlighted this game as historically significant, noting similar performances from three players with five-plus RBIs only once before, in 1955.
Maintaining Momentum on the Road
With their homestand record of 4-2, including wins against the Guardians and Royals, the Sox demonstrated competitiveness against division rivals. Despite some challenging games, Venable expressed satisfaction with the team’s position. Vargas reflected positively on the energy from the fans, emphasizing the supportive atmosphere that has bolstered their home record to 28-14.
Looking ahead to the road games, where the Sox currently hold a 15-25 record, the team plans to continue their momentum. They start a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday. Kay shared optimism about the team’s ability to maintain their performance away from home.
