Chicago Endures September’s Most Intense Weekend Rain

After a weekend featuring the heaviest September rainfall in seven years, Chicago residents can anticipate light precipitation and overcast skies in the coming days, according to weather officials.

Gino Izzi, senior meteorologist at the National Weather Service, indicated that Monday presents as “more drizzly, if anything.” He also noted the rainfall recorded at O’Hare International Airport on Saturday and Sunday was the heaviest in September’s two-day period since 2019. Specifically, Saturday witnessed 0.86 inches of rain, and Sunday saw 1.21 inches.

Izzi expected Tuesday to start cloudy, with skies gradually clearing throughout the day. In comparison, Sunday’s intense rainfall necessitated the cancellation of an open-water swim in the Chicago River and brought the McCook Reservoir to 95% capacity. These storms also resulted in an early closure of Riot Fest Saturday evening and delayed its reopening until Sunday afternoon. Festival attendees donned ponchos while navigating through muddied surfaces at Douglass Park.

Weather reports indicated that conditions at Chicago’s Midway Airport on Monday morning were overcast with temperatures at 59 degrees. O’Hare Airport registered temperatures at 62 degrees alongside an overcast sky.
