Chicago Bears Face Challenge with Montez Sweat Suspension

The Chicago Bears have encountered a challenging situation on defense. Veteran defensive end Montez Sweat is suspended for two games without pay due to violating the NFL’s rules on performance-enhancing substances, confirmed by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Sweat can return on Friday, October 23, after Chicago’s Week 7 game against the New England Patriots.

The suspension means the Bears lose an experienced player during a crucial early part of the season. This comes after a tough 31-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers, which halted the Bears’ momentum from prior wins over the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets.

Sweat’s role in the Bears’ defense has been crucial since joining from the Washington Commanders in 2023. Originally drafted 26th overall by Washington in 2019, Sweat was traded to Chicago for a second-round draft pick. The Bears then extended his contract for four years at $98 million, marking him as one of their highest-paid defensive players.

In 2024, Sweat recorded 5.5 sacks, establishing him as a leader on the defensive line. In 2025, he secured 10 sacks, continuing his role as a key pass-rusher. In the current season, Sweat has achieved two sacks, contributing to games against Carolina and Philadelphia.

Head coach Ben Johnson and his staff now face the task of compensating for Sweat’s absence. The Bears need other linemen to step up to maintain defensive pressure crucial for competing successfully.

The team holds a 3-2 record, showing potential with strong performances against Philadelphia and the Jets. However, the game against Green Bay exposed weaknesses, with the Packers scoring 31 points.

Sweat’s suspension raises questions about the Bears’ defensive capacity to handle strong opponents. His status for October 23 depends on the league’s reinstatement process completion.

The substance involved in the violation remains undisclosed. In the meantime, the Bears must prepare for upcoming games without one of their top defensive players. Maintaining strong defensive performance without Sweat will be challenging.

With important games ahead, Chicago aims to maintain competitiveness in the NFC North. The team has considerable football ahead, needing the defense to perform well during Sweat’s suspension.
