ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, has a feature known as Trusted Contact. It aims to help users during times of emotional distress. This option enables users to designate someone they trust, who can be contacted if they are at risk. Information from NPR estimates that more than a million weekly users discuss suicide and self-harm with the chatbot.
Importance of Human Connection
Experts in suicide prevention emphasize that human connection plays a crucial role in preventing suicide. OpenAI introduced the Trusted Contact feature in May. It connects users experiencing suicidal thoughts with a trusted individual during emotional crises. NPR highlighted this feature in August while reporting on a tragic incident involving a young woman.
ChatGPT is designed to identify signs that a user may be risk. If someone has set up a Trusted Contact and the bot detects a serious risk, it will alert the person listed. However, the feature must be configured in advance.
User Experience and Accessibility
NPR wanted to investigate how users are informed about Trusted Contact. When a new user signs up for ChatGPT, the app does not mention this feature. The option to set up a Trusted Contact is available through the app’s settings but requires user initiation.
If the app detects severe distress but no Trusted Contact is set up, ChatGPT can’t notify anyone. It will, however, provide support by directing users to contact trusted individuals or hotlines like 988.
Feedback from Mental Health Professionals
Mental health experts have mixed feelings about Trusted Contact. Holly Wilcox of Johns Hopkins suggested offering it to all users before emergencies arise. Psychologist Ursula Whiteside found the setup straightforward but acknowledged potential challenges for those in high distress.
Whiteside, who runs a suicide prevention non-profit, noted that her clients appreciate technology’s additional support. Jennifer Lockman from the University of Alabama expressed skepticism. She doubts a chatbot can replace the guidance of a trained mental health professional.
Despite reservations, Lockman sees potential in the Trusted Contact feature. She recognizes the importance of human connection for those contemplating suicide. Research shows that strong relationships are protective factors.
OpenAI’s Commitment to Improvement
OpenAI is refining how and when ChatGPT suggests the Trusted Contact feature. This includes collaboration with psychologists and researchers. The company assures users that this feature is part of a broader strategy, alongside prompting users to take breaks and offering crisis hotline information.
Lockman remains hopeful but calls for evidence on the feature’s effectiveness in preventing suicide. She emphasizes that while technological solutions can help, ongoing research is essential to understand their impact.
If you or someone you know is in crisis, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available at 988.
