The Los Angeles Chargers faced difficulties at the start of the NFL season. With matchups against the Arizona Cardinals and Las Vegas Raiders in the first two weeks, a promising start seemed possible. Instead, the Chargers found themselves 0-2.
In both losses, the Chargers allowed 26 points and scored only 14. Defensively, they averaged conceding 349 yards per game and secured only one turnover. Pro Bowl safety Derwin James Jr., who currently has a broken left pinky finger, expressed frustration following the loss to the Raiders.
“We got to look each other in the eye, man, and just tell the truth and just get better,” James stated on the team’s website. “Because, right now, that s— just looks trash. … I’m angry, but being angry don’t fix anything. Being angry don’t fix the problem that we have.”
Despite his strong personal performance, registering 17 tackles and a pass breakup so far, the team needs overall improvement. James emphasized the need for the team to win these close games, noting they are not being blown out, but must execute better.
The statistics highlight Los Angeles’s rocky start. OPTA Stats noted that the Chargers are only the second NFL team to suffer consecutive double-digit losses at home against teams with less than a .200 win percentage in the previous year. The 1926 Racine Tornadoes were the only other team to experience this and folded after just one more game.
Upcoming games against tough opponents, including the Buffalo Bills and Seattle Seahawks, add to the pressure on the Chargers to turn their season around. As the team faces Week 3 on the road, overcoming early setbacks remains critical for future success.
