Cassidy’s Primary Defeat: A Lesson in Political Loyalty

Senator Bill Cassidy’s recent loss in the Republican primary marks the end of his long career in public office. His defeat highlights the influence of former President Donald Trump in Republican politics.

In Louisiana, Cassidy failed to advance past the primary round. Trump-supported Rep. Julia Letlow and state Treasurer John Fleming are now set to compete in a runoff on June 27. The winner will likely succeed in the general election given Louisiana’s strong Republican leanings.

This outcome adds to Trump’s record of removing Republicans viewed as disloyal. Cassidy’s tensions with Trump stem from his 2021 vote to convict Trump during the impeachment trial for inciting the January 6 insurrection. Cassidy had recently won re-election by a large margin, making his impeachment vote a surprise to many.

Throughout his tenure, Cassidy often displayed moderate views on issues like healthcare, though he typically aligned with party votes. His decision to convict Trump broke this pattern. After the vote, Cassidy stated, “Our Constitution and our country is more important than any one person.”

Trump’s influence persists among GOP voters who expect lawmakers to show unwavering loyalty. Of the seven GOP senators who voted to convict Trump, only two remain in office.

Cassidy’s support for legislation aligned closely with Trump’s agenda. He rarely opposed Trump’s legislative and administrative initiatives. The National Republican Senatorial Committee highlighted Cassidy’s backing of Trump’s tax bill.

Despite voting to impeach, Cassidy showed discomfort with aspects of Trump’s policies and maintained a strong pro-vaccine stance. This drew attention but did not affect his consistent support for Republican priorities.

One notable instance of his moderation involved healthcare. In 2017, Cassidy appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” insisting any healthcare reform should pass a “Jimmy Kimmel test” to protect vulnerable patients. Yet, he ultimately supported a GOP bill that risked pre-existing condition protections, which failed narrowly in the Senate.

In recent events, Cassidy expressed concerns about DHS actions but voted with his party on related issues. Trump’s endorsement of Letlow came as she prepared her campaign, illustrating the ongoing Republican adherence to Trump’s influence.

Letlow proceeds in the primary, while Cassidy steps away from candidacy.
