Carson Holmes Leads Libertyville’s Championship Pursuit

Carson Holmes, a senior left fielder for Libertyville, stands as one of the key returnees for the Wildcats, the defending Class 4A state champions. His leadership and experience provide guidance to teammates who are less experienced. Holmes takes pride in this role. He remarked, You want to be the person to rely on when the situation demands it. We expect challenging games ahead. In tough times, it’s crucial to unite and support each other.

Holmes frequently spearheads efforts, batting third in the lineup. In the Class 4A Hoffman Estates Regional championship, Libertyville triumphed over Stevenson with a 13-3 victory. Holmes reached base four times during the match. Senior pitcher Chase Lockwood contributed by delivering four scoreless innings for the Wildcats, whose record stands at 26-10-1. They are set to face Mundelein in the upcoming Libertyville Sectional semifinals.

During a pivotal third inning, Libertyville scored nine runs with assistance from walks, hit batters, and an error. Holmes recorded the only hit, a two-run single, saying, I made contact with a good pitch and tried to adjust when necessary, referring to the collective effort of staying true to their game plan by taking walks when offered.

In prior postseason games, Holmes’ performance was noteworthy. Last season, he batted .500 over seven games, including a memorable home run on the same field. Coach Matt Thompson expressed hope that Holmes would continue his success, praising his consistent swing and skills, especially in the challenging role of batting third.

Following the departure of three Division I recruits, the Wildcats revamped their lineup around Holmes, who embraces his pivotal role. He commented, My focus is always on benefiting the team. I approach each pitch as an opportunity, prioritizing team success over personal achievement.

This season, Holmes started the playoffs with a .276 average, alongside two home runs and 23 RBIs. Reflecting on his performance, he said, I’ve faced challenges but strive to maintain a positive attitude and competitive spirit. Ultimately, team victory matters most, regardless of individual performance.

Acknowledging his responsibilities beyond batting, Holmes is recognized as a vocal and strategic leader in the outfield. Right fielder Jack Cenar noted Holmes’ crucial role in directing and supporting teammates defensively.

Holmes also excelled in football for Libertyville. As the baseball season progresses, he is eager to contribute to the team’s regional ambitions. He stated, Baseball is an exciting time of the year. Winning regionals is the current goal, with eyes on each subsequent challenge.
