Brazilian legislators in Mato Grosso recently encountered some unexpected visitors. A group of capybaras made an appearance at the state legislature in Cuiabá. This event took place on July 30, momentarily diverting attention from a scheduled vote.
Nayara Bueno, a legislative staffer, captured video footage of the animals as they calmly moved through the building’s entrance. Staff members tried to usher the animals back outside.
“They show up here quite often, so we’ve gotten used to seeing them,” Bueno told The Associated Press.
Officials confirmed that the capybaras did not cause any damage during their visit. These animals entered through the front door of the legislative building without incident.
The government complex is adjacent to a park that houses diverse wildlife, allowing easy access for the capybaras. Native to South America, capybaras are semiaquatic mammals typically found near wetlands. They often travel in groups and weigh up to 175 pounds.
The building’s proximity to a wildlife-filled park explains the capybaras’ visit. These creatures have become popular on social media due to their relaxed demeanor around other animals and humans.
