Candidates for Indiana State Senate Seek to Address Key Issues

Since 2014, Indiana’s State Senate 6th District will experience a change in leadership. DeMotte Democrat Kate-Lynn Holley and Republican James “Jay” Starkey are competing for this seat. The previous holder, State Senator Rick Niemeyer, a Republican from Lowell, lost his position following defeat in the May primary.

Kate-Lynn Holley’s Campaign

Kate-Lynn Holley, running for the Democratic seat, is a real estate agent from DeMotte. She decided to enter politics due to the increasing difficulties faced by Hoosiers trying to make ends meet. She expressed that many feel disenfranchised, regardless of their political beliefs, believing decisions are made without their input.

This is Holley’s first attempt at running for political office. She attributes her campaign strength to skills acquired from her real estate background and time as a professional wrestler. Her primary focus is on affordability, including housing. She has observed clients being priced out during the home buying process. Holley intends to address housing affordability and the overall cost of living, including utilities, groceries, and gas prices.

Education is another priority for Holley. She aims to review Indiana’s voucher program that offers state-funded scholarships for private school costs. Holley questions the appropriateness of voucher allocations, noting that beneficiaries earn between $250,000 and $300,000 annually. She advocates for reassessment of funding distribution.

Despite Starkey’s endorsements, Holley remains resolute in her campaign strategy, emphasizing connection with constituents disillusioned with current politics. She urges voters to prioritize candidates with genuine interests rather than party allegiance.

James “Jay” Starkey’s Platform

James “Jay” Starkey, a construction project manager from DeMotte, did not comment directly but outlined his plans on his campaign website. He aligns with President Trump’s agenda as a “true Christian conservative.” Starkey seeks to deliver accountable leadership, protect life from conception, uphold traditional Christian values, and pursue tax reforms.

Starkey previously expressed strong support in Lake County during the Republican primary and represents opposition to established Republican state senators. Endorsements from Gov. Mike Braun, Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith, and Attorney General Todd Rokita strengthen his campaign.

His platform includes strict immigration enforcement, increased school choice, opposition to diversity policies, and enhanced parental control in education. Starkey backs local law enforcement efforts and plans property tax reform in response to predicted tax hikes. Additionally, he aims to ensure fair utility pricing amid expected rises due to data center development in Northwest Indiana.

Starkey emphasizes the need for responsive leadership, voicing constituents’ concerns over lobbyist influences in politics.
