New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo recently explained to reporters that not participating in plays during the game against the New Orleans Saints was a consequence of a previous fumble. This mistake occurred during the team’s match with the Washington Commanders the week before.
Skattebo accepted responsibility for his lack of involvement, stating, “I got punished for what I did last week, and I understand, so I got to be ready when coach calls my name – and that wasn’t today.” He acknowledged expecting reduced playtime but was surprised by having no opportunities at all. His coach’s message is clear: stay focused and persistent.
Adding another layer to the narrative, former Giants running back Tiki Barber shared insights on the WFAN Giants postgame show. Barber suggested that Skattebo’s reduced role might be due to internal issues within the locker room. According to Barber, “There have been a lot of negative plays for him,” including issues with reading the run game and protection responsibilities. These kinds of “busts” may not be apparent to casual fans, but Barber believes they have significantly impacted Skattebo’s role.
The Giants also released former Pro Bowler Najee Harris and are assessing Tyrone Tracy Jr., who has shown potential but remains inconsistent. This situation highlights the team’s need for a reliable lead running back.
Despite Skattebo being regarded as the Giants’ top running back, his on- and off-the-field challenges this season seem to be affecting his standing. If Barber’s observations hold weight, improving focus, ball control, and demonstrating progress would be vital for Skattebo to regain trust from head coach John Harbaugh.
