Cam Brown, a senior defender at Naperville North, made his first varsity start with responsibility and gratitude. Thrilled to play under Coach Jim Konrad for the Huskies, Brown expressed his excitement for wearing the jersey and stepping on the same field as many renowned players before him.
“Wearing this jersey and being on this field, having Coach Konrad as my coach, is an honor,” Brown stated. “We discuss legacy often, understanding we must honor the jersey and wear it with pride, knowing the greats who wore it before.”
Brown plays a crucial role in nurturing younger teammates, aiding their growth as they aim to defend their Class 3A state championship with a mostly new team. Committed to Wisconsin-Platteville, Brown has been named a captain by his peers, with only three others having prior varsity experience.
Coach Konrad acknowledged Brown’s leadership. “It’s impressive the boys chose him as captain. You could see today how he leads from the back, with a vocal and positive presence. We emphasize accountability, and Cam delivers it effectively,” Konrad remarked.
In the Huskies’ 1-1 draw against West Chicago, Brown anchored the defense. He worked alongside three senior teammates, Liam McKenna, and twins Luc and Alec Schwanebeck, who were all debuting in varsity play. Junior Ziden Elganzouri and sophomore midfielders Carter Joseph and Barrett Yeaman also joined the lineup.
Junior goalkeeper Misael Gonzalez praised Brown’s potential, labeling him as one of the team’s most promising players. “Cam is a great teammate and captain. His communication and hard work in defense are commendable,” Gonzalez said.
Recalling the 2025 state championship game in harsh conditions, Brown described the experience as surreal. “Despite fatigue and weather, creating those memories for my team felt like a dream come true.”
Facing the new season, Brown is eager to make an impact. He prepared by learning from past captains like Colin McMahon and Sam Hess. “They were excellent leaders. I aimed to apply their teachings here. It’s about translating their approaches for this current team,” he explained.
The Huskies’ emphasis on effort is clear in their motto, “Nothing without work,” which has led to multiple state titles. Coach Konrad mentioned New Zealand’s All Blacks as an inspiration for their approach. “Cam embodies the ethos of doing the small, essential tasks that make a difference. His diligence influences his teammates and enhances his leadership,” Konrad noted.
Brown cherishes his role as captain. “Playing as a center back and leading suits me. It’s an honor to take on this responsibility,” he expressed.
Concluding his high school career with pride, Brown values his contribution to the team’s storied tradition. “Leaving a mark is about upholding the legacy. I’m privileged to fill the shoes of past greats,” he said.
