Boyle Heights Ammonia Leak Prompts Health Warnings

A fire involving an ammonia gas leak at a cold storage facility in Boyle Heights has led to health orders due to air quality concerns.

Shelter In Place

A shelter-in-place order was issued for areas south of the 101 Freeway to Washington Boulevard, and east of Soto Street to Indiana Street. Residents were advised to:

  • Close all windows and doors.
  • Turn off air conditioning and heating systems.
  • Bring all people and pets inside.
  • Close vents.

Smoke Advisory

A smoke advisory covered a large part of East Los Angeles. The public was urged to limit outdoor exercise and those with health issues were advised to stay indoors.

L.A. County recommended residents in areas such as Montebello and Monterey Park take precautions when outdoors. Sensitive individuals should stay indoors, close doors and windows, and limit outdoor activities. For emergencies, residents should call 911.

Weather Conditions

The National Weather Service predicted southwest winds ranging from 6 to 12 mph would persist throughout the evening.

Evacuations

A small number of people closest to the fire site were evacuated as a precaution.
