Billy Joel’s Motorcycle Collection Auction
Billy Joel, renowned for both his music and his passion for motorcycles, is auctioning off his extensive collection in New York City. Next month’s Retromobile New York event will feature more than 70 motorcycles from Joel’s personal collection offered without reserve.
Gooding Christie’s, the auction house organizing the event, describes Joel as a genuine motorcycle enthusiast with a varied collection. The array includes older models and bikes with sidecars, showcasing Joel’s diverse interests.
David Gooding, founder of Gooding Christie’s, remarked, “The exciting thing is all the motorcycles are being sold without reserve.” This means each item will go to the highest bidder regardless of the final price.
Proceeds from the auction will partly benefit the Joel Foundation, a charity supporting music education and public women’s health initiatives.
Featured Motorcycles
The collection includes motorcycles from brands like Ducati, BMW, Harley-Davidson, Yamaha, and Triumph. Among them is a specially commissioned 1978 Triumph T140 Bonneville. This bike was a gift to Joel from Madison Square Garden, celebrating his record 150 sold-out shows there. The motorcycle features a keyboard design on its tank and comes with a matching helmet listing every show he played at the venue.
Another standout is a 1982 Ducati 900 Mike Hailwood Replica, honoring Hailwood’s legendary 1978 Isle of Man victory. The sale also offers a 1975 Ducati 750 Sport estimated between $25,000 and $35,000.
Auction Event Details
The auction will take place on November 20-21 at the Javits Center in New York. Gooding Christie’s views Joel’s collection as a significant consignment for their inaugural sale.
David Gooding commented on the appeal to both motorcycle enthusiasts and Billy Joel fans. The motorcycles are notable and valuable on their own, but their connection to Joel adds extra interest.
Billy Joel’s Health and Legacy
Billy Joel, famous for hits like “Piano Man” and “Uptown Girl,” recently announced his diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a condition affecting vision, hearing, and balance. In May 2025, Joel underwent brain surgery due to NPH, having been advised his rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle impacted his brain nerves.
NPH occurs when cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the skull, pressing on the brain. It predominantly affects those over 65 and typically requires surgery to implant a shunt for fluid drainage.
Joel’s statement expressed contentment in building his motorcycle collection, now inviting others to enjoy the ride.
