Comedian Bill Maher recently criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for his statement on the anniversary of the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack in Israel. During an episode of Real Time, Maher mocked Mamdani’s comments, suggesting the mayor was insensitively handling the situation. Maher joked that Mamdani’s potential rapper name could be ‘Tone Deaf.’
Mamdani had recognized the day as ‘profoundly painful’ for New Yorkers, expressing grief alongside victims. He condemned continued Israeli actions, calling it ‘ongoing genocide’ in Gaza, noting over 74,000 Palestinians, including 21,000 children, were affected.
“Even since the so-called ceasefire, more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed,” Mamdani stated, emphasizing the emotional toll on many New Yorkers, adding, “our tax dollars fund these war crimes.”
Mamdani urged rejecting a world where occupation continues and war crimes meet impunity. He stressed the importance of honoring the dead by fighting for freedom and dignity for all.
Maher’s critique extended to Mamdani’s previous music career, mocking his past stage names. Maher suggested Mamdani would blame Israel for the attack, criticizing his approach to the complex issue.
Controversy grew as Mamdani faced backlash after dining at a Palestinian restaurant criticized for perceived antisemitic statements. The menu once used language seen as anti-occupation. Criticism surrounding Mamdani stirred debate, with anti-Israel groups showing strong opposition.
Democratic strategist Kaivan Shroff argued Maher’s critique might politically benefit Mamdani. Shroff compared this to Trump-like strategies, suggesting Mamdani’s statement courted his base despite backlash, aligning with his campaign promises amid the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Maher’s remarks potentially help Mamdani rally support, Shroff suggested, particularly from those doubting his commitment. The controversy underscores the continuing political discourse surrounding the Israel-Hamas situation.
