Married to Alma Viator since 1992, Jones left behind a legacy cherished by many. Viator expressed her sorrow on Facebook, describing him as the love of her life and recalling the rich, full life he led. She mentioned his love for others and the love he received in return.
Born on August 30, 1941, in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, Jones began his career on stage before transitioning to film and television. His film debut came in 1972 with ‘Together For Days.’ He appeared in ‘Moonrunners’ in 1975 and ‘The Lincoln Conspiracy’ in 1977.
Jones debuted on television in 1976 with a role in ‘Movin’ On.’ He took part in ‘Nashville 99’ in 1977 and ‘The Magical World of Disney’ in 1978. His most notable role came in the late seventies when he portrayed Cooter Davenport on ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’. He played this role in over 140 episodes from 1979 to 1985 and reprised it in reunion films in 1997 and 2000.
Beyond acting, Jones ventured into politics, serving two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives for Georgia’s fourth district from 1989 to 1993.
