Returning to work after the birth of my son marked the most challenging period of my life. Participation in a postpartum depression study at New York University Hospital revealed unexpected changes in my mental health. Despite understanding the reasons, transitioning back to work required leaving my infant with someone else for nine hours daily, exacerbating my stress.

I cherished my career as a writer and appreciated my income. However, the dilemma arose as the cost of childcare began to diminish the significance of my paycheck. Each week felt like a struggle to justify working while managing my newfound responsibilities as a mother.

Welcome to Mildly Maternal: Diary of a Work In Progress Mom, a weekly exploration of life as a new mother adjusting to unexpected changes. I had never experienced holding a baby before my own arrived, and this journey has been as educational as it has been emotional.

Based in New York City, I am a 34-year-old mother of a 14-month-old, setting my own parenting rules without prior knowledge. My mother expresses concern over some of my parenting choices, yet my decade-long writing career, particularly my eight years at Newsweek, deeply influences my life.

Prior to becoming a mom, the idea of leaving Newsweek would have seemed absurd. Motherhood hasn’t entirely shifted this passion, but it did create moments of doubt. Specifically, two months post-maternity leave, I nearly resigned, drafting several potential emails expressing my intent.
