Kristen Cruz aimed to tactically place the ball in an open area of sand, concluding a thrilling rally at Oak Street Beach during the AVP Women’s League Championship. This strategic play gave the Austin Aces a 12-11 advantage in the second set, stirring excitement among spectators.

Despite long rallies, Cruz’s decisive move stood out. “Both opponents were at the net, and I was near the line,” Cruz explained. “I aimed for the open sand, and luckily the ball landed there, earning us the point.” This approach contributed to the Aces’ momentum, leading to their win over Palm Beach Passion in straight sets.

Electric, said her partner, Taryn Brasher. Her decision-making and ball touch are excellent, as is her overall volleyball IQ.

Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson, who previously dominated the league, faced their second consecutive defeat in the finals. Their past achievements include winning a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics in beach volleyball.

Meanwhile, in the men’s AVP League Championship, Phil Dalhausser made a remarkable return following a calf injury. Dalhausser, partnering with Trevor Crabb, secured a consecutive title for the Palm Beach Passion men, overcoming New York Nitro in straight sets.

Despite dealing with past injuries, the 46-year-old Dalhausser exhibited his blocking prowess, reminiscent of his 2008 gold medal performance. Dalhausser acknowledged the significance of teamwork over individual moments, highlighting Crabb’s strategic service placement.

Dalhausser and Crabb faced the San Diego Smash in a tight semifinal match, securing a 15-11 victory in the first set with Dalhausser contributing seven points during a crucial 9-0 run. The second set concluded with Dalhausser blocking a Smash attack, finishing at 19-17.

Although he didn’t record an ace in the final, Dalhausser felt content with his comprehensive performance, citing the importance of focusing on other aspects like siding out and blocking.

In the women’s semifinals, the Aces ousted Miami Mayhem, featuring players Kelly Cheng and Megan Kraft. The Aces overcame an initial 3-0 disadvantage to win decisively, securing their place in the championship match.

Cruz emphasized, “It’s about focusing on each point individually, managing our side of the net, and trusting our defensive plays.”
