Coach, Players, and Conditions
Arizona State University has placed hockey coach Greg Powers on paid administrative leave. This follows a player collapse during last month’s workout, resulting in hospitalization.
Assistant coach Mike Corbett is set to take over temporarily. Details on Powers’ return remain undisclosed.
Incident Details
Matthew Mayich, a 21-year-old sophomore from Ontario, Canada, collapsed on August 20 during a workout. He remains with limited recovery prospects, according to family attorney Robert Carey.
A school report states Mayich struggled with a medicine ball exercise when he collapsed. Despite a reported exercise temperature between 86 to 89 degrees, the National Weather Service noted the day’s high exceeded 100 degrees.
Mayich’s initial response deteriorated despite cooling efforts by coaches and trainers.
Parental Concerns
Mayich’s parents have called for coach accountability. They argue placing only Powers on leave is inadequate, and demand broader measures to ensure player safety.
A statement from them highlights concerns over potential locker room retaliation.
Player Testimonies
Seven players have contested the school’s version of events. In a letter to ASU’s president, they claim policy breaches, insufficient water breaks, and extended workout durations.
They allege Mayich had no water breaks and displayed distress prior to collapsing. Emergency equipment was reportedly absent during the incident.
Consultant’s Defense
Tim Ziesel, cited by the school as running the workout, was labeled by students as conducting a “military-style” session. Ziesel disputes this, emphasizing a standard workout comparable to high-school athletics.
He stressed focus should remain on supporting Mayich’s family, rejecting alleged characterizations of the exercise.
Investigation and Legal Response
Students request staff involved be placed on leave pending independent investigation results.
Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell announced an ongoing ASU Police Department investigation into the incident. Following its conclusion, comprehensive review will be undertaken by her office.
