Anesthesiologist Criticizes Tennessee’s Lethal Injection Efforts

Anesthesiologist Dr. Joel Zivot engaged with anchor Bill Hemmer regarding the legal implications after Tennessee’s botched execution of Christa Pike. Dr. Zivot, who provided counsel for Pike’s defense team, elaborated on the difficulties involving the state’s choice of lethal injection drugs. Pike’s status on death row persists after the failed execution attempt.

Death Row Survivor

Christa Pike, a prisoner in Tennessee, was discharged from the hospital and returned to prison following her survival of a malfunctioning lethal injection that resulted in severe medical issues, according to her defense team. After surviving two doses of pentobarbital on September 30, Pike returned to the Deborah K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center, her residence for over three decades, as articulated in a collective statement from her legal representatives.

The statement declared: “Christa Pike was discharged from a local hospital and is now at Deborah K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center where she has been housed for more than 30 years. She is grateful to the first responders and her medical team for their care in these extraordinary circumstances. She is continuing to receive medical care at the prison, and we will continue to track her recovery.”

Pike regained consciousness and began speaking after enduring two doses of lethal injection drugs. Attorneys Stephen Ferrell and Luke Ihnen from Federal Defender Services of Eastern Tennessee, along with Randy Spivey and Kelly Gleason from the Tennessee Office of the Post-Conviction Defender, released the statement.

Medical Complications

Pike’s discharge date and recovery status, including previous ailments like pneumonia, a blood clot, and arm injuries, remain undisclosed by the legal team. In an interview with BBC Radio 4, attorney Stephen Ferrell reported Pike walking within her hospital room, though she continued to face challenges with arm injuries and memory issues.

“Physically, she is experiencing significant issues, notably with her arms, which are injured and difficult to use,” Ferrell remarked. “Today is her first day walking, albeit briefly around the room.”

Her recovery follows an unexpected regaining of consciousness after attorneys suspected she might be brain dead earlier. Pike’s death sentence was a consequence of the 1995 murder and torture of Colleen Slemmer, aged 19, in Knoxville.

Legal Consequences

The failed execution has triggered legal proceedings, as a Tennessee judge mandated the preservation of physical and electronic evidence related to the execution attempt by the state’s Department of Correction. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has stopped all executions for the remainder of 2026. The timeline and decision for Pike’s death sentence execution remain undetermined.
